Some national forests and Bureau of Land Management lands allow dispersed camping: camping outside developed campgrounds, usually free, with no toilets or water.
Before you go
- Check the local ranger district or BLM office for rules, closures and fire restrictions
- Stay limits apply, often 14 days
- Use existing sites; don't create new ones
- Bring all water, and pack out all trash
- Know how to handle human waste properly
Is it for you?
Dispersed camping suits campers with some experience. Start at a developed campground if you're new.
Rules vary by area. Check with the U.S. Forest Service or BLM. Thrifty Trailblazer isn't paid by any outdoor brand, retailer or booking site.
