Annual pass or pay at the gate?

Count the visits, then decide.

4 min read

The national parks and federal lands annual pass covers entrance and standard amenity fees at many federal recreation sites. Whether it's worth it depends on how often you'll go.

How to decide

  1. List the federal parks and sites you plan to visit this year
  2. Look up each entrance fee on the park's website
  3. Add them up and compare with the pass price
  4. Remember the pass covers your vehicle or a set number of adults at per-person sites

What it doesn't cover

Most passes don't cover camping, tours, parking concessions or state parks.

Prices and rules change. Check NPS.gov and Recreation.gov for current details. Thrifty Trailblazer isn't paid by any outdoor brand, retailer or booking site.
